A Series of 2-day Workshops in with Dr Cathy McQuaid TSTA(P)
This is a series of workshops is for trainers of counselling and psychotherapy, for PTSTAs or those thinking of becoming a PTSTA who really want to know more about what it means to be a trainer of counsellors and psychotherapists. We will explore the essential requirements and attributes of an effective trainer, consider learning theory, presentation skills, setting and marking assignments, managing group processes and dealing with challenging students, developing your own personal style and philosophy of training.
The workshops are for anyone who is at any stage of their development as a trainer. You may be a beginner or already have a few hundred hours of training experience.
Each two-day block will offer a mix of theory, practice and experiential work.
Explore Theories of Education and Training – a 2-day workshop – 18-19 Nov 2017
This 2 day workshop will assist trainers or those thinking of becoming trainers of counselling and psychotherapy to explore some of the theories used in education and training.
Experiment with Teaching Methods and Styles – a 2-day workshop – 17-18 March 2018
This two-day workshop is for trainers or those thinking of becoming trainers of counsellors and psychotherapists to experiment with different teaching methods and styles, to help them find one, or more that suits them. The workshop will be creative and fun!
Marking Assignments and Writing Feedback – a 2-day workshop – 26-27 May 2018
This two day workshop is for trainers or those thinking of becoming trainers of counselling and psychotherapy to learn the art of marking and how to write feedback for the trainees. Clear marking and unambiguous feedback are key to helping trainees to develop, supporting their developmental edges and celebrate they achievements.
Dealing with Challenging Students – a 2-day workshop – 21-22 July 2018
This two-day workshop is for trainers, or those thinking of becoming trainers, who would like to explore and find ways of dealing with challenging students. We will discover some of the underlying and transferential issues that can arise in training, both for the trainer and the trainee, and consider how these can be managed in a training situation.
Developing a Personal Style and Philosophy of Training a 2-day workshop – 29-30 Sept 2018
This workshop will focus on helping you to define who you are as a trainer, to discover what is at the heart of your training philosophy and underpins your professional identity. We will explore your personal style as a trainer and what makes you different from other trainers.
Supervision of Training – a 2-day workshop 17-18 Nov 2018
This workshop will be a space for you to bring all your training issues, conundrums, dilemmas and curiosities for supervision within the group. There will be ample opportunity for helping your peers in the group with their questions and joining in rigorous discussion as we grapple with some of the thorny issues that arise in our roles as trainers.
QAA Benchmark Statement for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the UKCP Professional Occupational Standards for Psychotherapy and Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapies) – a 2-day workshop – 23-24 Mar 2019 (UK participants only)
This workshop will introduce you to some of the external standards that inform the standards for training in counselling and psychotherapy in the UK. You will have the opportunity to see which of these are currently covered by your training programme and consider which ones you have yet to include.
All workshop will be limited to 10 participants and tailored to meet the specific needs of the participants.
Times: Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 10am – 5pm
Cost: £195 / €225 per 2-day workshop.
Cathy has over 20 years’ experience as a trainer, 15 of which has been training counsellors and psychotherapists. She was the EATA English and Other languages CTA exam coordinator for 5 years. In 2010, she was awarded a Doctorate in Psychotherapy for her research into TA psychotherapy training. She is Chair of the UKATA Training and Accreditation Standards Committee, and a member of EATA PTSC and has been a member of EATA COC. Cathy is the author of ‘What You Really Need to Know About Counselling and Psychotherapy Training: An Essential Guide’ published by Routledge in 2014.
