I think we all have the capacity to think, feel and be creative in the choices we make in our lives; in the ways we seek satisfaction and fulfilment – whatever it may be that provides that for us. I think therapy is about helping people work out what is blocking their ability to do this for themselves and then working out what they want to do about it.
People often come to see me feeling pretty distressed and are hoping for some kind of relief of this as soon as possible. I approach the work in two ways, firstly I will be working with you to look at how the problem is affecting your life on a day to day basis, then to identify strategies and things you may be able to do to help yourself immediately. Secondly we will look at where the problems may have come from. This is where we might be looking at the past and some of your early experiences. Our early life experience and relationships often form a blueprint for how we then go on to see the world in later life. Sometimes we need to look at these experiences and the perceptions of reality that were formed by them and see if they need updating. Sometimes we need to experience new ways of relating with people to be able to do this. Therapy can provide this opportunity.
Who I work with
I’ve worked with people who are anxious or depressed, experiencing obsessive thoughts and feelings or working through issues around sexual identity whether gay, bisexual or hetero sexual. I’ve worked with people who have experienced a bereavement, are having family or relationship problems or dealing with the trauma of sexual abuse either recent or in the past.
I work with individuals, couples and groups.
Therapy for me a creative endeavour that is stimulating, challenging and life affirming. I also see the work is a privilege to be a part of someone’s life as they seek to explore themselves and how to live.
